About the Homer Simpson gene

Here's a nice short TIL for today.

The scientists at Emory University must have been great fans of The Simpsons when in 2010 they found a gene in mice that they named after the shows protagonist Homer. The gene actually makes the mice dumber. When turned off it was found that mice were better able to remember and walk through mazes.

Of course the Simpsons wouldn't be the Simpsons if they hadn't addressed the Simpson gene themselves prior to this (Simpsons did it!). In the 1998 episode 'Lisa the Simpson' it was revealed that both Homer and Bart carry the Simpson gene, to which their laziness, baldness and general stupidity may be attributed.
